Zoe got her face painted... somewhere... (see, this is the problem! It hasn't even been that long and I have no idea where she got her face painted). Our normal procedure is to take a picture of her face painted so she can clean it off before bed. This way we will always remember how pretty her face was (just not where it was painted).

This was the sunset one evening at Zoe's soccer practice. By the end of the fall season the days get pretty short and the last bit of practice tends to be pretty dark. Zoe really wanted a picture to remember the beautiful sunset.

I made my amazing cinnamon rolls for a friend... only I forgot to include the yeast. No matter how pretty they look, they won't rise without yeast. (I made them again the next day, with yeast, and they were amazing!) Also please don't think we gave BOTH pans to my friend, we ate one pan.

On my way to a photo session this balloon landed right in front of me. So cool. (It's not on the road, it's in a culdesac behind the main road.)

The kids had dentist appointments - no cavities! I love their dentist (this is not unanimous), for many reasons, but one reason is the fun movies they can watch while they're getting their mouth worked on or just while waiting around for the dentist to come.

Naturally Zoe especially loves the movies. When it's Frozen showing, Pierce is not as enthusiastic.

A funny conversation Matt and I had one day.

When Mattie and I were shopping for a jean jacket that she realllllllly wanted, I saw this awesome display. Who DOESN'T want acid-washed jean sweats??? So cool that this is back from the 80's.

One Saturday we went to Maker Faire, a weekend of cool exhibits of building, technology, and amazing do-it-yourself ideas. This was a table where the kids could terraform the sand, and the topographic map projected on top of it would change based on the depth of the sand.

This is a big sculpture that you could control parts of his face.

You could fly this drone and use it to take pictures. It has 8 propellers on top and a camera hanging on the bottom.

Pierce and I are not sure what this is exactly but Matt took a picture of it.

Matt and Zoe went back after a soccer game and they did this catapult thing. I need to get the scoop from Zoe.

Explora, the local children's museum, had a fun table where you were supposed to make your own Rube-Goldberg contraption. (It involved quite a bit of masking tape.)

One evening there was a high-altitude weather balloon very visible in the sky not too far from our house. Matt and Mattie have gotten pretty good at taking pictures through the telescope. The light was so beautiful - it's being hit by the last sun rays before it sets, so the rest of the sky appears very dark, even though it wasn't really too dark out yet.

This is Pierce's first inquiry for the year. It didn't need to be a big deal, but the project grew and grew into a really big project. He and Matt wanted to know if a pendulum could follow Kepler's laws of planetary motion. At first they were trying to trace a pendulum's track in a shallow pan of flour. I think it worked kind of okay, but they found that they needed the time data as well as a picture of the ellipse.

So after this they hooked up a laser to the end of a string and hung it off the balcony, then took movies of its ellipse when they got it started. Using the movie they could get the time data and also used the computer to trace the ellipse itself for calculations. Then a lot of complicated math ensued, with the resulting answer of no, pendulums don't follow Kepler's laws of planetary motion, but for some of the laws it was close. (Next time for a mini-inquiry, Pierce will choose a less complicated question to answer.)

Zoe and Matt experimented with surface tension in the garage. Zoe's favorite thing to do now is "work in the garage with Daddy." He lets her do all kinds of fun stuff - it all started with painting projects last year (she has many very nice plexiglass paintings, and maybe if you're a family member of ours, you have one too!). And now she loves to do all sorts of things, sometimes helping him with projects, sometimes practicing her guitar out there, sometimes doing homework, and sometimes just keeping up a running commentary.

One cool thing that we got to go to was Sandia Family Day. We're used to never getting to visit Matt at work, but this was the exception - we got to go on base, have a picnic lunch (at which there were a few informational booths and a race car), and see Matt's office and the Z Machine where he works. It was really interesting. We're so grateful for him and all his hard work that he does to support our family! Thank you Matt!

Matt cut his hair a couple of weeks ago. If you remember in the spooky bottle post from Halloween (2 posts ago), there was a bottle of "Yeti Hair". 'Nuff said.

On the way home from Bernilillo, where Pierce's soccer games are, we stopped by the Galloping Grace pumpkin patch a couple of weeks ago. We love their pumpkin patch and we love their ranch, and they are such nice people! This year was the best pumpkin patch yet - I didn't take pictures of too much of it, but they had some really fun sling slots where you could shoot tennis balls at targets. Michelle (owner) later told me that it was SUPPOSED to be just their volunteers out on the firing range, but it was really busy and a million kids were out running around trying to catch the balls. I hope nobody got hurt. The sling shots were super fun. And yes, if you stretch them as far as you can, it is possible to shoot over the back fence.

The corn pit seems to grow every year. Corn kernels everywhere!
